Subaru EJ22 Engines

Subaru EJ22 Turbo

This is one of the many Subaru engines that are used on the Impreza, Legacy and Outback models. Since its inception, this engine has seen very many modifications that have not only significantly increased its power but reduced its rate of fuel consumption as well. When the engine was launched, it had a displacement of 2212cc and was SOHC Turbo charged. The fuel was being delivered by a multi-point fuel injection while it had a Horsepower of 135 PS and a Torque of 137 lb at 4800rpm.

The engine has since retained its 2.2 liter capacity but some of its internal and external features have been changed. The modifications have seen a huge reduction in engine friction. This has been achieved by coating one of the major sources of friction, the piston with Molybdenum. This thin coating has also reduced the cylinder wall scuffing. The skirt of the piston has changed its shape weighs about 100gms lighter. The compression ratio has also been reduced while the cylinder head has been redesigned. The original closed deck design has been changed to an open deck. The camshaft sprockets are constructed using a material similar to resin while the spark plug pipe is pressed into the cylinder head meaning if it gets damaged the cylinder head has to be replaced.

There are three major versions of the EJ22 turbo engine. The first is EJ22E. This has a capacity of 2.2 liters and is the oldest version. The other version is the EJ22T which also has a capacity of 2.2 liters. This SOHC Turbo engine has a Horsepower of 165 PS and has a closed deck, oils squirters and has no inter cooler. The other version the phase two EJ22G has a closed deck and capacity of 2.2 liters. Its displacement is 2212cc, the valve train is DOHC while it has a multi point fuel injection delivery. In addition to the phases two, there is the EJ22G Turbo DOHC with a Horsepower of 280 PS at 6000rpm and a Torque of 362.8 N-M. One of the most notable advantages of the EJ22 Turbo engine is that most of the parts are marked which makes servicing very easy. Overall, this model is quite impressive as compared to the previous models.
